A Little History
Stakis plc entered the hotel business in the early 1960s. During the 1990s, principle activities included operating hotels, casinos and 20 health clubs in the UK.
May 1996
LivingWell was acquired by Stakis plc in May 1996, and comprised 6 Premier stand-alone clubs. At this time, LivingWell also operated 25 health clubs in Hilton hotels within the UK.
October 1996
The 25 Stakis hotel leisure clubs were re-branded and incorporated into the LivingWell division.
May 1998
In May 1998 LivingWell opened its first 'new brand' clubs at Templepatrick and Strathclyde, followed by Leicester, the largest yet, at 38,000sq ft.
March 1999
In March 1999 Ladbroke Group plc acquired Stakis, including LivingWell. In April, LivingWell acquired Viva! Health and Leisure Ltd; at the time Viva! had 5 clubs in England.
March 2000
In March 2000 the first international club opened at Hilton Malta.
June 2000
In June 2000 LivingWell launched its hair and beauty concept - The Sensory.
January 2001
In January 2001 LivingWell announced the intention to create the first truly global health and fitness brand, confirming the acquisition of a chain of clubs in Australia a month later.
July 2002
In July 2002 LivingWell announced its third club concept LivingWell Express a Hilton hotel based club designed with the international business traveller in mind.
September 2003
Hilton Group plc committed AUS$100 million in September 2003 to establish LivingWell's club network in the Australian market, with 10 new clubs in addition to a new Premier club for Hilton Sydney.
April 2004
In April 2004 LivingWell called on the Government to abandon VAT on health club membership and introduced 'Health of the Nation' membership for key workers.
April 2004
In April 2004 LivingWell launched a New Medical Advisory Service employing in house Medical professionals to deal directly with members potential exercise limitations.
November 2004
LivingWell celebrated the opening of two new Premier Health Clubs in Australia, following an AU 20m investment at Willoughby, north Sydney and at Mermaid Waters on the Gold Coast.
December 2004
In December 2004 LivingWell introduced a bold and direct new approach to recruitment by launching its own employer brand www.iamofftolivingwell.com
February 2005
LivingWell Health and Fitness portfolio chooses Precor for their cardio vascular needs and is benefiting from continued re-investment.
May 2005
In May 2005 LivingWell launched a bold new brand promise –‘Personalised fitness for life’
September 2005
LivingWell Inverness Premier is recognised by the FIA to be in the Top 3 Health Clubs throughout the UK.
October 2005
LivingWell Health Club in Canary Wharf is recognised for the second time as UK ‘Corporate Club of the Year’ at the prestigious Fitness Industry Associations FLAME Awards.
